Award-winning Design Collaborative Bergmeyer recently released its 2022 Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) report, reflecting on the organization’s efforts over the previous year to practice its core beliefs, while celebrating the significant growth and changes the collaborative has experienced since 2022.
Bergmeyer’s 2022 CSR Report aligns with the organization’s “B the Change” mission statement, further reinforcing giving forward as a core part of the Design Collaborative by growing its community connectivity by increasing scholarship programs, volunteer opportunities, and community design programs.
“This first annual Corporate Social Responsibility Report describes what we accomplished in 2022 in service to our commitment to using the resources of our organization to enrich and strengthen our communities, to support organizations that advance equity and social justice, to help mitigate and adapt to the climate crisis, and to create opportunity for young people to explore careers in design,” said Bergmeyer President Rachel Zsembery, AIA, LEED AP BD+C. “We hope that you find inspiration in the many stories within this report and encourage you to reach out to us and share your own stories and experiences with our team so that we may find opportunities for new connections and collaborations around this important work.”
The report focuses on four key areas, each of which supports the organization’s mission statement:
Creating Opportunities
With offices in Boston, Los Angeles, and now Columbus, Bergmeyer’s workforce continues to increase its diversity to resemble the population of the cities in which it works, and the clients that it serves. Partnering with organizations like The Hip Hop Architecture Camp, Boston Private Industry Council, PAVE Global, and the Dearborn STEM Academy to further expand opportunities for young people of diverse backgrounds to explore careers in design, Bergmeyer continues to connect students to promising career pathways while creating a diverse talent pipeline for local employers.
Strengthening Communities
In addition to encouraging staff members to become civically engaged in their own communities, in 2022 Bergmeyer volunteered its design thinking as part of a pro-bono visioning exercise with the American Institute of Architects’ Community by Design in Petaluma, CA. Bergmeyer also began work with Boston-based nonprofit Breaktime as a pro-bono client to create design and construction documents for much needed renovations to the Portland Street facility in Bulfinch Triangle.
Supporting Organizations
Through its charitable donations, volunteer hours at The Red Cross Food Pantry, and its professional services, Bergmeyer collaborated with Community Servings, OneUnited Bank, and the Sportsmen’s Tennis & Enrichment Center to address vital human needs within local neighborhoods.
Environmental Stewardship
In 2022, in addition to re-framing its design thinking around five “impact areas” (Energy, Materials, Carbon, Resilience, and Equity) and leveraging the power of its professional organizations, Bergmeyer engaged with several organizations including Boston Fenway Victory Gardens and LA River Cleanup to volunteer and support their efforts in fighting the largest design challenge the world faces: the climate crisis.
Zsembery continues, “as we look toward the future at Bergmeyer, we do so with a collective optimism that fuels our creativity, connectedness, and curiosity and a self-awareness that allows us to practice with purpose.”
